While other studios simply set up mics and press record Ashton offers full scale Music Production for his clients. Ashton has experience ensuring his clients achieve the best performance, arrangements and production possible. Below are some general ideas about how Ashton handles music production.
The Song
Production begins with the right song. Before recording your songs it's essential to make sure these things are sorted out to save time and money. If the song isn't good enough, then all the cool production tricks in the world won't be able to save it.
Some things Ashton looks for in songwriting:
- Does the verse catch your interest?
- Is the chorus memorable enough?
- Are all the parts of the songs in the right place?
The Song Arrangement
After we have the right song, it's important that the arrangement of the song is perfect. All Instruments should be played to complement each other without stepping over the vocalist. It's important to realize that the "sound" of a recording has a lot to do with how locked the musicians are and how well their parts fit the song.
Some things Ashton looks for in arrangements:
- Are the drums and bass playing together in a way that makes an appropriate groove for the song?
- Are the guitars, and keys complementing the vocals?
- Are leads hooky enough and in the right place?
The Performance
This part is easy if the arrangement of the song is programming based, but gets more difficult the more real instruments get involved. If the recording is going to be of a band and the performances are lacking, there are a lot of tools that Ashton has to fix it. Beat Detective in Pro Tools can time drums so they are perfectly on time but retain the players feel and dynamics. Bass can be moved on time to the drums so the rhythm section is locked and guitars can be moved on time as well. If the singer is pitchy or weak, multiple takes can be edited together and pitch tuning is available with Melodyne or Antares Auto-Tune EVO.
Whether it's a band or a singer/songwriter with a guitar/vocal, Ashton can give you a production that will be up to industry standards, and more importantly get you noticed by the industry.
