MORPH PRODUCTIONS

*Toronto Recording Studio - Recording, Production, Mixing, Songwriting/Composing*

Welcome to Morph Productions, the home of Morph studios and Toronto producer Ashton Price.

Let's face it, there are many recording studios in Toronto and the GTA that can set up some mics and press record. Ashton can do that too, but his projects come to life with his production and arranging skills. He also has help along the way with his team of session musicians. Whether it's rock, hip hop or pop music production, Ashton has proven himself as one of the best guys to get you a radio-ready product at a reasonable price - in the GTA and beyond!

If you think "talk is cheap", you're right. What really matters is the finished product. Click on the above links to listen to Ashton's demos and beats while learning more about Morph Productions. Feel free to call or email if you have any questions or would like to book a meeting.

Check below to see some of the exciting things that have been going on at the studio.

March 30- London Ontario artist Johnny was having trouble finding a studio in his home town so he decided to travel the distance to Morph Productions and by all accounts was not disappointed! Jan 15- Recently upgraded to Avid Pro Tools 9 and while I'm not a regular Pro Tools user I have to admit this version makes it tempting. Track count has been increased and many limitations have been lifted making this a very useable program. The most exciting change of course is that you don't need to use Avid (Digidesign) hardware anymore. Seeing my Apogee Ensemble work so well with Pro Tools warms my heart. :)

Jan 13- Recorded the audio book version of Toronto author Jessica Gera's book, "Falling in Love Works Better than Prozac" which is being published under Burman Books. Jessica did a great job reading the book and it's a good read as well. Look for it soon.

Bob does demos of the songs at his place and then gets me to do more professional recordings of the songs. I play in the rhythm guitars and bass and session drummer Craig Lapsley laid down the drums. Bob's well crafted pop/rock tunes are sure to be well received.

Jan 2- Just mounted an LCD monitor in the vocal booth to better serve those needing a high quality ADR studio option. Here's a pic: "Voal Booth Pic" . ADR (AKA automated dialogue replacement) is the process of re-recording the original dialogue from a tv/film scene because a different voice was desired or the original performance wasn't recorded very well on set. It is also used in video games and animation.

Nov 18- Toronto based Somalian singer Fortuun comes back for her second album this year with Morph Productions. The instrumentalist is really talented and the album will sound great when it's finished.

Oct 21- Japanese reggae artist Jun drops by to do a track at Morph Productions. He brought his beat that was done by one of his friends and did his vocals here in japanese. Very cool sound!

Oct 16- Doing an EP with Toronto pop artist Steven. Steven gets me to do the beats and writes his lyrics on top of them and records his singing here. He loves electronic manipulation of the voice so melodyne, auto-tune and all kinds of distortions are brought out when he comes around!

Oct 12- Working with Oakville pop/rock artists Robby and Rush. These guys have a great sound and lots of potential and I'm really glad they've chosen Morph to do their recording.

Oct 6- Begin working with Toronto hip hop artist OSoRich again. OSoRich was one of the first guys I started working with when I first moved the studio to Toronto (it was previously in Hamilton) so he has a long history of working out of here. His new stuff promises to be a step up from what he was doing before and I'm looking forward to working with him on the new material.

Everything went great and Matt will be taking the tracks to some friends to mess around with.

Kat as usual always delivers and the songs are sounding great because of her. Kat just finished up touring around the world with Pink and will be available to do some more sessions till she's called to duty again. The session was made even more interesting because the artist who lives in Montreal tapped into us here in the Toronto studio via Skype. It was a Morph Productions first and ended up going pretty smoothly. Will be doing more sessions via Skype in the future.

Toronto Recording Studio August 2010:

*August Update* The funny thing about the news page is that the busier I am the emptier it is because I don't have time to update it. Just realized that I haven't updated since July so I'm just going to do one massive update for August right now. August was spent mostly finishing off a lot of projects for people that I've been working with since the winter in some cases.
- Kyle Dine's children's album was finished and sent off for mastering at the beginning of the week.
- The Stolen Owner's demo was finished and sent off to be tweaked by a pretty heavy hitter in the industry.
- Meghan Stock did an album here, playing acoustic guitar and singing at the same time. She did about 16 tracks like that and it turned out great. Not very many people could sound as good as her raw like that.
- Toronto pop/rock artist Dua came to do a few songs as well. He played all the instruments for his demo and I recorded and mixed.
Toronto hip hopper "Real" came by to start working on his mix tape.
- Finished off 4 of the 8 languages that Toronto pop artist Bobby Smart is recording for his song "Don't Go Away".
Oh ya… Morph Productions turns 11 this month. At some point I'm hoping to have some time to celebrate. Hope you're all doing well!

The 9 song album turned out great and though I have no idea what she's singing about (My somalian is a bit rusty) her voice is beautiful and the album turned out great.

Toronto Recording Studio May 2010:

May 24 - Toronto pop/rocker Sonya is back in the Toronto studio again after about a year long hiatus. Sonya's come back with a darker song than last time which I'm going to rock up as much as possible. Sonya has a great voice and this song will be a cool dark rock production when finished with all the bells and whistles.

May 23 - Montreal pop/rocker Albert came up for the long weekend to continue working on his new album. On sunday we had session bass player Nick Czarnogorski in to lay down bass tracks for 10 songs. It was a long day but Nick proved himself a pro as always and played in a lot of really cool parts. Nick has been coming here for years and is always available to lay down some bass tracks on peoples tunes. He's a versatile player and has a few basses to choose from for sessions.

May 22 - Toronto jazz singer Evelyn Arthur came to the studio today to lay down three jazz tracks with her guitar player Thomas. 3 songs were recorded live off the floor with Evelyn in the booth and Thomas in the guitar room. Tracks turned out really well and mixing will commence later this month.

Tiffany has a very beautiful voice and has some great songs which is going to make this a good project to work on.

May 18 - Recording another audio book for Burman books for their audio book company based out of New York. This book was written and read by Burman Books president Sanjay Burman. I've been working with Burman Books for about 2 years now and I have to say their books just keep getting better and better. Sanjay's book is definitely his best yet and will probably do a lot for himself and for the people he's trying to help.

May 16 - This past weekend the AES (Audio Engineers Society) had it's big conference at the Direct Energy Centre and I was honoured to be asked to be a guest speaker at one of the panels they were having about running a small studio. May 3 - Ottawa pop/rock artist Peter Machechnie came up for a few days to finish the tracking for his upcoming album. Peter was in Toronto at U of T for music but has since went back to Ottawa for the summer. Mixing on his project will commence next week and the project should be out by the fall.

May 1 - I've been mentioning this for a while now but just a reminder that Factor Demo Award grant submission deadlines are coming up on May 14th. Contact me directly and we can discuss if this would be a good project for you and how I can help you apply. Toronto Recording Studio April 2010:

April 30 -This was the month of amazing session musicians coming to Morph! First I had Brownman, National Jazz Award winner, over to lay some killer trumpet tracks down for a project. Next Kat Lucas, who's currently on a break from a world tour with Pink dropped by and laid a bunch of tracks for two of the artists I'm working with. Last but not least vocalists Ryan Malcolm and Tia Brazda came to sing on two different projects respectively. I was definitely honoured to get some professional talented musicians on some of the projects I've been working on. Everyone had a great time and the projects will be the better for it!

April 27 - Toronto pop band (they're more than pop but it's hard to describe what they do) are back to record an entire album at Morph. These guys have all the potential to do some big things in the industry with a sound unlike anything that I've heard while still keeping things catchy. Do a search on youtube for "Airplane Boys" to see some of their spacey videos.

April 24 - Montreal rock/pop artist Albert came up to finish his first album and jump right back in to the second one! Albert's one of my favourite people to work with and the progress he's made on his music over the last few years has been great to watch. His project is definitely worth looking out for in the future.

April 23-There's no bigger compliment to me than people coming back to me, sometimes years later, to record their new projects. There's been a few people coming back lately but one of my favourites, Toronto rock/pop artist Gemma Wood, is coming back with her band. Regular readers of the news section will remember that Gemma and I did an EP together last year and since then she's gotten a band together and decided to come back to Morph to do some demos of the new tunes. I gotta say the new tunes are great and I can't wait to see the new band live!

April 20 - On April 20th I went to a Factor seminar going over the submission process for their grants this year. I've had lots of experience over the years getting people grants through Factor but wanted to make sure that I was still up to speed on the process. The seminar was very informative and I look forward to putting the knowledge that I've learned towards the next set of grants. The next "Demo Award" grants deadline is May 14, 2010 so contact me early if you want help.

April 16 -Toronto pop singer Pawan has gotten me to make another beat for him for a new tune. Probably be recording it in the next few months when he's finished writing.

April 15 -Recorded a track for Toronto hip hopper E Sober. E Sober got the beat from well known american producer Mr. Green. E Sober dropped the track really quickly and is sending it back to Mr. Green for approval. Really cool flows!

April 13 -Mixed a cool hip hop track by Toronto hip hopper Don Swagville. Don produced the song himself and then got me to mix it at my studio. Look out for this hot track this summer!

April 12 -Just finished mixing a really cool R&B song for Toronto artist Dean Hayve. Dean did a lot of the recording himself on his Logic Pro set up and then had it touched up by another producer. He then brought the tracks to my studio for mixing. The track ended up turning out great and is already for mastering by one of my mastering engineers.

I try to keep it pretty informative with deals I see on the web and my experience with different gear and techniques.

April 6 -I'm happy to announce that Toronto's own Brownman, trumpet extraordinare is back home for a while having circled the more than a few times with New York hip hop star Guru of Jazzmatazz and Gangstarr fame. Brown is going to be around for a while and will be available for sessions at the studio. Brown is a dedicated, inspirational musician that will definitely put a different flavour on your tracks.

April 5 -Toronto hip hop artist Echelon dropped by today to get a song mixed here at the Toronto studio. Echelon had a producer do the beat for him and then recorded the vocals at a different studio. He decided to give me a try for the mix because he liked the work I've done. The mix session went really quick and good and Echelon is ready to get the song mastered and released. It's a good tune, look for it soon!

April 2 - Producing new tune for Toronto hip hop artist T-Blaze. I'm making the beat and handling the production and T-Blaze is laying down his vocals. It's a great song written about his mother in Haiti and it's definitely worth checking out when it's out. Mixing is happening next week at the studio and the planned release is early May.

April 1 -I've just made arrangements with a great Toronto music video company to do videos for my clients at a low introductory price. Contact Ashton directly to get the details and get a demo DVD of previous work.

Toronto Recording Studio March 2010:

March 28 -*New Gear Alert* Just picked up a Mac Pro with 10 gigs of ram and 3.2 tb of hard drive space. This machine is a real number cruncher with space to spare. Everyone's projects are running a lot smoother and I'm happy.

I also picked up a few new plugins this month. The new Melodyne Editor that allows you to edit polyphonic pitch material. I've tested it out a bit and it really works. Who knew that would ever be possible. I also picked up Andrew Slate's drum plugin that has a lot of incredible drum sounds and the Nomad British Bundle which has an incredible Neve like eq and compressor in it. More good things to come from the studio!

March 26 -Toronto children's performer Kyle Dine has decided to come to Morph Productions to record his second C.D.. For those of you don't know Kyle writes and performs children's songs promoting allergy awareness. Kyle is performing most of the instruments himself on the album and he got my session drummer Craig Lapsley to handle the drums. Kyle has really impressed with me with is clever songwriting. He's definitely a talented guy who takes his craft very seriously. The album should be done in a few months.

March 21 -Toronto R&B artist Karine came in to record a song about her native Congo. It was a beautiful song that she had me put a bit of music behind. Renee will be using the song for many charity activities she does to raise awareness about what's going on in the Congo. Let's hope it goes far.

March 17 -Rock/pop artist Renee Bullock came by to record some vocals on her already recorded instrumental beds. Renee had some great songs and a really powerful voice. Hopefully she'll be coming back to the studio soon with some new material.

March 16 -Doing a song with Toronto hip hop artist 2G. 2G selected a beat from some I had available and wrote a super catchy song to it. We had a female vocalist sing the hook and he did the verses. 2G is a great talent that you're going to be hearing about really soon.

March 15 -Just finished a great song from Scarborough hip hop artist Don Belo. The song is a tribute to his native Haiti and it's really well written and performed. I did the beat and produced the song. Don Belo is having a release party/performance for his song on March 20th. You can see the flyer Here

March 8 -Toronto Hip Hop artist Duke comes back to Morph Productions after a three year break from recording to record some more material. Duke has Ashton do the beats and he writes his rhymes and performs on top of them. Duke's a great guy and I'm glad he's back working here @ Morph!

March 7 -Burlington pop/dance artist Shi-Anne is almost finished her second demo Morph Productions. The demo had me doing the beats and production with her writing the lyrics and singing. Shi-Anne has done two demos now at Morph Productions and this second one has really stepped things up. As a result she has a few people interested in her and things are looking good! Look out for new Shi-Anne tracks going up on the demo player soon.

March 3 -Toronto hip hopper Bruce comes back to Morph Productions to lay some more tracks down for his CD. Bruce currently has a talented buddy doing his beats for him and he comes to the studio to record his vocals and get the tracks mixed. Bruce has some great flows and the beats he rhymes on are really well done. Look for this project being finished sometime this year.

Toronto Recording Studio February 2010:

February 28 -Recorded a new track for Bolton hip hop artist Scatter Brains. Scatter Brains does his own beats and then brings them to the Toronto studio to record his vocals with my high end vocal chain. I get the mix balanced and then I bounce out mix stems so he can further balance it at home if necessary.

February 19 -Recording an album for piano player Peter Grant Mackechnie. Peter is getting his friends to play some of the instruments he can't and I'm laying some bass tracks down for him. The plan is to have the album finished by May when he's finished university. The songs are a lot of fun and the project is going to turn out great.

February 12 -In addition to working on Dorrie Doucette's project together, multi-instrumentalist Patrick has also brought in a Toronto reggae artist to work with out of this downtown Toronto studio. As with the other project Patrick plays all the instruments in and Ashton engineers and co-produces. The artist, Dennis lays down his vocals and then we mix it together. Dennis and Patrick bring a lot of life experience to their music and it shines through with their collaboration.

February 10 -Toronto Christian folk/rock singer Dorrie Doucette is working on an album at Morph Productions. She has a musical accompanist, Patrick who plays the guitar, bass and keyboards for her and we program the drums together. With Dorrie's uplifting songs and one of the most beautiful voices I've ever recorded this album will definitely be a must have. All recorded here in the downtown Toronto Recording Studio!

February 9 -Mixing Whitby electronica artist "Alpha Channel". The band is largely the work of Lance Pilon who gets his friends to help out to fill things out. He recorded the project on a PC in Sonar and we've transferred the songs over to Logic Pro which is my mix program of choice. I mix the tracks on my own while keeping track of the time used and then send them to him via email. When we're finished all the tunes we'll get together and do the final tweaking. Look out for this project, it's going to be really good!

February 7 -Writing and producing a song with a Toronto computer programmer who's looking for a special gift for his girlfriend for their anniversary.

February 6 -Session banjo player (amongst other things!) John Zytaruk dropped by to lay down a banjo track for an new age artist based out of Ireland. The tracks were recorded at the Toronto Recording Studio to files sent by the client. We sent the banjo tracks back and the artist was very happy with the result. The world is getting a lot smaller!

February 5 -A song that I did the beat and production for just got licensed to an online video game calked "Our World". The artist's name is Jeud and he did his album at Morph Productions about 3 years ago. Congrats Jeud!

February 3 -Just finishing mixing Toronto recording artist Ion Ray's 3 song demo. He used Apple's Garageband to record and produce the demo in his home studio and then came to me to mix the project. I use Logic Pro usually so it was as simple as clicking on the Garageband file and watching Logic convert it into something that could be worked with in Logic Pro. The mixes turned out great (and were done under budget) and hopefully Ion Ray will have much success with his project that was 2 years in the making!

February 1 -Composing music for a television commercial that will be airing in Malaysia. The work is being done here in my Toronto Recording Studio and being sent via the internet to the post guy in Malaysia. The details are all discussed using skype. If the commercial ever appears on youtube I'll post a link.
